Bed bug treatment in Hoofddorp: our approach
By day, bed bugs hide in seams, cracks and screw holes close to where someone sleeps. During the inspection we take the bed apart as far as needed and examine the mattress, slatted base, headboard, bedside tables, skirting boards, curtains and sofa. Adjoining rooms are included too, because an infestation seldom stops at one bedroom.
For the treatment itself we choose heat wherever possible. We raise the room and its furniture to a temperature that kills every stage, including the eggs, which are less sensitive to many products. Where needed, cracks and seams also receive a professional product. You get instructions beforehand on preparing the room, and a follow-up check is scheduled afterwards.
How to recognise bed bugs
Not everyone reacts to the bites, so one person in the household may be covered in bumps while another notices nothing. Look for these signs:
- itchy bumps in a line or cluster, often on the arms, shoulders and neck
- tiny black dots, their droppings, on mattress seams, slats and behind the headboard
- rust-brown spots of blood on the sheet or pillowcase
- flat, brown insects the size of an apple pip, plus pale shed skins
- in a heavy infestation, a sweetish, musty smell in the bedroom
How bed bugs get into your home
Bed bugs have nothing to do with a dirty house. They feed on blood, not dirt, and turn up in spotless hotels just as easily. Usually they travel as stowaways: in a suitcase or rucksack after a hotel stay, in a second-hand bed, sofa or bedside table, or in a guest's clothing.
In apartment buildings they can also move on their own, through pipe ducts, gaps along skirting boards and the voids behind sockets. If you find them, let the VvE or your neighbours know, so the insects do not keep travelling back and forth.
What you can and cannot do yourself
A few things you can do straight away:
- Wash bedding and clothes at 60 degrees or more, or tumble-dry them for a good while on the hottest setting.
- Keep washed items in sealed plastic bags until after the treatment.
- Vacuum mattress seams and the slatted base thoroughly and take the vacuum bag outside at once.
What to avoid: moving to another room to sleep, carrying belongings to other rooms or using shop-bought sprays. All of these push bed bugs further into the house. Never drag an infested mattress unwrapped through a shared stairwell either. If the bites are mainly around the ankles and something jumps away, fleas are more likely; read about flea treatment.
Bed bugs in hotels, short-stay and rental properties
For hotels, short-stay providers and landlords, a quick and discreet approach matters. We work room by room, plan around occupancy and also check the rooms beside and below. Afterwards your cleaning or housekeeping team receives clear pointers: what to look for when changing beds and what to do if a guest reports bites.
That way one infested suitcase does not end up affecting an entire corridor. For any other pests on your premises, our pest control in Hoofddorp team is ready to help.
